The Normal Christian Life
by Watchman Nee
I read this book as a new believer and it totally changed my life. I have visited this book again several times since and it is like visiting an old and dear friend who knows me well. It certainly paved the way for a more intimate relationship with Christ in the midst of some very challenging circumstances. I would highly recommend this book, however, I am rather biased about this book because I also read it during a crossroads in my life and it influenced me in a way that has only brought joy and fulfilment.
Nee does an incredible job of exploring the scope of what Christ spiritually accomplished in His death, resurrection, and ascension. Having been raised Christian, I knew all the stories and could repeat what Jesus did for us, but most of that was conditioning and I had no personal identification with any of it. Through this book, I was able to throw out a bunch of theological junk and actually have an encounter with the Living God. I don’t credit that experience solely to this book, but this book definitely helped establish this foundation.
It is theologically sound, very accessible, and practical. The theology encourages WORK and has made my life far more authentic and real.
Like Natalie, I would rate this one of my top 5 “little books that help to explain the Big Book” – Whilst this book is best only read half a page at a time, if you devote the time, effort and study it, will take your walk as a disciple to a whole other level. His framing of the difference between “knowing and reckoning” the truth is liberating and encouraging. Dennis often talks about “conceptually understanding” verse “owning the truth” …. Reminding us we can not give what we do not own Acts 3:6. If you desire the type of impact that will change you, your family and your environment, then this book is a must-read.
