Weekly Devotional 18th October 2024
We are continuing to explore the knowledge of God as expressed in the Psalms. This week we will continue to look at Psalm 110 which is also a Psalm of David.
Psalm 110:5-7 – “The Lord is at Your right hand; He will shatter kings in the day of His wrath. 6 He will judge among the nations, He will fill them with corpses, He will shatter the chief men over a broad country. 7 He will drink from the brook by the wayside; Therefore, He will lift up His head.”
When we engage in the presence of the Lord, He comes to us as the strength of our right hand. Not only does He come with His power, but He shatters any power that opposes Him.
The word shatters (Hebrew machats) is a brutal word. It means to strike or wound so severely that the victim can never rise again. The POSB says,
The Lord is also at our right hand, saving and delivering us from all evil (Psalm 16:8). The right hand has great significance in the Bible. It is the place of…
support (Psalm 73:23)
protection and provision (Psalm 109:31; 121:5)
security and defence (Psalm 110:5; Isaiah 41:13)
guidance and direction (Isaiah 45:1)
From this we are assured that, for all those in Christ today, we are protected, upheld before the Father, and directed by the Holy Spirit. We need fear no evil. Even though trials, attacks and hardships come upon us, we can still march boldly through life, because we know that no weapon formed against us can prosper (Isaiah 54:17). Our enemy may pursue us like a roaring lion, but victory over Satan and his forces is ultimately ours through the power of Jesus Christ our Lord (1 Peter 5:8; John 16:33; 1 John 4:4). What a comforting truth!
Despite what we might see around us today, we are assured that before the end of the age comes, a frightening expression of righteousness will take place. God will judge the nations and none who oppose Him will be able to escape His sword.
If the nations will not have Christ as their Head, they shall find their political heads to be powerless to protect them. The king or leader of the greatest nation shall not be able to escape the sword of the Lord; nor shall the enemy (Satan) who rules over the children of disobedience, be able to escape without a deadly wound.
This should cause us to call out the warning from Isaiah 55:6 – Seek the LORD while He may be found; Call upon Him while He is near.
Jesus is a merciful Saviour who freely offers grace and forgiveness to all who trust in Him. But on that day, He will be a merciless judge. All who reject Him as Saviour will have to face His fierce, undiluted wrath (Revelation 19:11–21). It is imperative that we warn the world of Christ’s coming judgment! We should plead passionately with every soul to repent and believe in Jesus Christ, otherwise they will face Him one day in judgment.
This brings us back to the concept that as well as being the Lamb that was slain, Jesus Christ is also the Lion of Judah. He is kind and gentle towards those who commit themselves to his care, but those who reject His yoke will face the awful, terrible power of Him when He arms Himself, gets on the white horse and rides.
Verse 5 says that He will lift up His head after taking a short drink by the wayside. This reverses what happened at His death on the cross where it says He bowed His head and gave up His life (John 19:30).
Now He lifts up His head as more than a conqueror. It is not only about His victory over death, but also about His exultation as Lord, His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and His total triumph over all His enemies who will be paraded and made a public display (Colossians 2:15).
Romans 8:17 says that All those who embrace Him and suffer with Him shall also be glorified with Him.
God bless you.
